Tom Savage shaking on ground after massive hit, briefly returned to game

After Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage took a hit that kept him on the ground with his hands twitching, he was allowed to re-enter the game in the 26-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. A series later, Savage was taken to the locker room and later ruled out with a concussion.

After taking the hit, Savage spent time talking to the team’s medical staff. Before the Texans’ next offensive series, a team official held on to Savage’s jersey and arm as he tried to go on to the field. Savage could be seen arguing with the team official before he was escorted to the locker room by the team’s trainer.

That Savage was allowed back on the field at all drew the ire of Chris Nowinski, the founding CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation and co-director of Boston University’s Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy.

“It was another good win for us at home. Something to build off of and keep going with this,” he said.

Crawford is 6-0-2 with a 2.22 goals-against average and .932 save percentage since Nov. 15. His best outing over that stretch came versus Florida as he turned aside 37 shots.

Facing the Panthers at United Center, Crawford is 3-0-0 with a 0.91 GAA, a .964 save percentage and one shutout in four games.

NDSU (26) and Sam Houston (16) have the most playoff wins in the FCS this decade. While the host Bison will appear in their FCS-record seventh consecutive semifinal, the Bearkats will be there for the third time in coach K.C. Keeler’s four years at the helm and the fifth time in seven years. But the Southland Conference power has suffered some lopsided defeats in the playoffs — hence the criticism — and they’ve dropped two championship games and one semifinal to NDSU in that time.canadiens_1252_3e532bccb93b1377-140x140

Oilers aim to start climbing back into race at Columbus

The Oilers generated chances, but the results simply weren’t there. With seven losses in the past 12 games, they are mired in next-to-last place in the Pacific Division standings.

McDavid is trying to do his part to provide a jump-start. After being slowed by illness last month, he has produced one goal and four assists in the past five games.

“I was happy with my game,” he said after the loss in Toronto. “I thought I was able to generate some chances.”

Teammate Milan Lucic has two goals and three assists in the past four games, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has scored three goals in the past six outings.

However, for the Oilers to start generating some wins consistently and help goaltender Laurent Brossoit (2-6-1), McDavid needs to be the driving force.

“He’s been really good,” Oilers left winger Patrick Maroon said of McDavid. “With him being sick, it’s been tough, but he’s finding his gear. Whatever he did (Sunday), I’m sure he’s going to continue that in Columbus. That’s why he’s our leader. That’s why he wears the C.”

The 76ers traded Okafor, seldom-used guard Nik Stauskas and a second-round draft pick to the Nets for forward Trevor Booker on Thursday.

Okafor also had off-court problems during his time in Philadelphia. He got a speeding ticket for driving 108 miles per hour and was suspended by the 76ers for two games after in an altercation outside of a Boston nightclub with a heckler.

“Speeding obviously is illegal,” Okafor said. “I know that’s not what you’re supposed to do. I guess you just learn how the page can turn on you and how everything can flip. I can’t really say I learned anything, because you know going in that’s not right. You just learn from your mistakes, but [it was] a tough thing that I went through, I got past, and I’m looking to better times now.”

Georgia State launched its football program in 2010.

The Panthers joined the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2013. Their only other bowl berth came in 2015, also at the Cure Bowl. They lost 27-16 to San Jose State that year. They’re looking to make amends this year.

Coleman has bounced around the league since going undrafted out of Cal in 2014 but has been around the Bills organization since last September. He was on the team’s practice squad most of last season before being active for five games. He was around all summer before being cut by the Bills prior to the 2017 season, re-signed for the one game when Marcell Dareus was injured, and then cut again.

Following a hot start, the Pistons have lost six straight — but all but two of those defeats were by five points or fewer. The margin of their latest loss was a little deceptive. They were within four points of Eastern Conference leader Boston with less than three minutes remaining before falling 91-81 at home on Sunday.

The skid has put the Pistons (14-12) in a mental funk. They’ll try to end the streak against the Nuggets on Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena. Detroit swept last season’s two-game series.

“You start to feel like you can’t play. We’ve lost some confidence and some spirit and we’ve got to get it back,” Van Gundy said. “We’ve got to gain a new perspective and get it back. We can come through this.”

SN’s Vinnie Iyer in his Week 14 NFL picks against the spread picked the Saints to beat the Falcons in a close game, 27-24.

SN’s David Steele in his Week 14 NFL picks straight up also picked the Saints to beat the Falcons, but in more convincing fashion, 33-21.canadiens_007_746f30dada452dcd-140x140

Cardinals beat Titans on Dawson’s 4 field goals

Rookie Chad Williams ran 33 yards on an end-around to ignite an eight-play, 71-yard drive that culminated in Dawson’s 32-yard field goal to put Arizona ahead 9-7 with 5:59 to play. Gabbert overthrew a wide-open Larry Fitzgerald in the end zone on third down to force the field goal.

That makes him the worst quarterback of the three who have taken snaps for Denver, but he’s got the highest ceiling. His competition is Siemian, a former seventh-round pick whose play has dropped off from an unimpressive, but competent, 2016 and Osweiler, a man Cleveland paid $16 million to stay the hell out of its QB race.

Of the aforementioned trio, the developmental prospect Lynch is the only lock to remain with his 2017 team. Siemian’s inexpensive contract makes him a valuable backup, but his lack of dead cap money also makes him an expendable cut should the team decide to go for a larger reboot at quarterback. Osweiler is a free agent after the season and remains bad at football.

Barea added a pair of free throws with 24.9 seconds left to pull Dallas to 93-92. But Crawford and Taj Gibson each hit a pair of free throws to secure the victory for Minnesota, its third in the past four games.

Asked how he felt about getting the hook, Price said “well, I didn’t wake up this morning hoping to get pulled. … It was a big game for us, Saturday night. But we fell flat.”

Galchenyuk drifted to the front of the net in time to redirect Jeff Petry’s feed past Brossoit on a power play with 6:16 remaining in the second to get Montreal on the scoreboard.

Brendan Gallagher took two minor penalties early in the third and Edmonton capitalized on the second one as Klefbom’s point shot went in off Montreal defenseman Karl Alzner’s skate at 2:39.

Afterward Sunday’s game, Pederson, perhaps fearing the worst, professed his confidence in his backup.

“This guy’s come in, he’s played a lot of football games in this league,” Pederson said of Foles, 28. “He’s started in this league. Guys have confidence in him. I have confidence in him.”

That was enough — just barely — for Jacksonville’s defense.

Trailing 27-10, Wilson avoided a sack and hit Paul Richardson for a 61-yard score. Down 30-17, Wilson connected with Tyler Lockett for a 74-yarder.

Wilson had a final chance to rally his team, but he failed to convert a fourth-and-9 pass from the Seattle 43.

Fournette iced the victory by gaining 13 yards on a third-and-11 play with less than 2 minutes remaining.

“That’s a distraction. And a lot of distractions come up when we don’t perform how we need to perform,” Winston said. “I’m a strong believer that coaches coach and players play. If you look at today’s game, the players [and] I didn’t play. I didn’t play. I had three turnovers.”

Koetter was informed of the report after the Bucs’ 24-21 loss to the Detroit Lions. Like Winston, he denied that there was any tension.

“I think Jameis and I have had an extremely consistent relationship over the last three years, and I don’t think anything different about it, but that’s just my opinion,” Koetter said, emphasizing that he’s more concerned about winning games than reports. “I know the truth about our relationship. My big concern is our football team.”royals_036

Aaron Rodgers undergoes tests that will determine whether he can return

Aaron Rodgers’ fate — and perhaps the Packers’ playoff chances — are in the hands of the doctors.

Mariota completed 16 of 31 passes for 159 yards. Tennessee managed 65 yards rushing against the Cardinals after gaining 198 on the ground in a win over Houston a week ago.

Mariota was 6 of 16 for 60 yards with two picks in the second half.

After the subsequent kickoff, the Titans faked a punt on fourth-and-1 from their 35. Initially, officials ruled that Eric Weems had made the first down. But Arizona coach Bruce Arians challenged the spot and, after a review, it was determined the runner came up a few inches short.

The Cardinals took over and Dawson’s 23-yard field goal cut the lead to 7-6.

Dawson missed a 40 yarder that would have given the Cardinals the lead with 12:04 to play. But the 42-year-old kicker would get another chance.

The Knicks appeared to have the game put away after three straight points from Jarrett Jack and Porzingis gave them a 101-92 lead with 3:46 left.

The Hawks then scored five consecutive points, including three free throws from Marco Belinelli, who was fouled as he attempted to hoist a 3-pointer, to make it 103-100 with 1:40 remaining. Porzingis answered with a quick basket at the other end to extend the Knicks’ lead 105-100 before Ersan Ilyasova’s layup drew Atlanta within three with 1:18 to play.

Brayden Schenn and Paul Stastny also scored, and Joel Edmundson recorded two assists as the Blues topped the Sabres for the 10th time in their last 11 meetings. Jake Allen made 22 saves, improving to 5-1 in six career starts against Buffalo.

Roger Brown had six of those, one of which resulted in a safety.

“Sometimes he talks all the way up until 15 seconds, sometimes he talks for five seconds, sometimes he talks for 10 seconds — it all varies,” Goff said. “Just like every other quarterback in the league, it stops at 15 seconds and we’re on the play.”

Big on Campus : We usually ‘t single out players from teams who lost for this honor, but the best effort we saw this past weekend came from Wisconsin receiver Abbrederis.Karlsson appears likely to get the nod to at least start Hertl’s spot for Game 4 as well as DeBoer indicated Monday that he’d prefer to leave Couture with his regular linemates.Thon, I’m looking for you coming soon.’45, we went to the T-formation with the same four the backfield. His wife Greene broke bother her legs and arm the incident, with the pair getting engaged just weeks later and marrying the following year.Especially given that it’s a bit surprising to him that he’s even this position to be drafted the first round at all.

It kind of helped me keep stuff perspective, Humphries said.Gyro’s comfort factor heading into training is significantly higher than it was a year ago, when he arrived Florida as the newbie who knew only a few of the Cardinals players. If it’s too true, lately we’ve been reminded of it too often.I have no respect for him, said -Green.Say it again.

While sacks weren’t an official stat until 1982, historians of the game credit the Lions with 11 sacks.

The Lions were going into overtime in 1998 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where Jerome Bettis would call for heads or tails on the coin toss.

Bettis alleges he called for tails, and it was tails. But referee Phil Luckett rewarded the Lions with the ball, claiming that Bettis had called “heads-tails” instead.

There are 27 players over the past nine NBA games who are averaging at least 20 points.

Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston did not start the second half of Tampa Bay’s 30-10 loss to the Saints after reinjuring his right shoulder from a hit by Saints defensive end Alex Okafor.

The Seahawks were becoming a buzzsaw before the Redskins became rude visitors. Seattle seems to have an inexplicable ineptitude game at least once every season under coach Pete Carroll, but it tends to come back strong from such wake-up calls.

Josh McCown gets a “revenge game,” along with go-to tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, as former Bucs playing well for the Jets. Ryan Fitzpatrick had McCown’s gig last season and now gets his first starting shot with Tampa Bay, which will be tougher without Mike Evans. The Jets’ passing attack is built to rip into a Bucs defense that can’t rush the QB or cover anything deep.

Tom Savage vs. Jared Goff last season would have created scary feelings for both sides. Now it’s just for the Texans, as Savage is bound to be rattled behind his shaky line with Aaron Donald’s push and Wade Phillips’ scheming on the other side. Goff, meanwhile, will keep rolling, as all of his wideouts are problems for Houston’s reeling pass defense.

Over the past three games, for instance, Murray is averaging 27 points on 19.3 shots per game. While we’ve seen some dramatic swings in Murray’s scoring pattern, he’s clearly a difference-maker when hot from the field.

Rodney Hood, Utah Jazz (32.2): There are 27 players over the past nine NBA games who are averaging at least 20 points.

Washington’s rushing game came into Week 11 on a downward trend, as in Weeks 6-10 this platoon ranked last in the league in rush yards per carry before first defensive contact (YBCT) (1.1). They also ranked next to last in this time frame in my good blocking yards per attempt (GBYPA) metric that measures how productive ball carriers are when given quality run blocking.

The Colts hung with the Steelers at home but didn’t have enough punch to put them away

Is Deshaun Watson making a case for MVP and Rookie of the Year while being out for the season with a torn ACL?

As Derek Wolfe said, the Broncos have gone from Super Bowl contender to a team nobody takes seriously.

Counting wins against Cleveland (12-9 in overtime) and Baltimore (23-20), the Titans have now triumphed in three straight games decided by four points or fewer against opponents with a combined record of 7-20. Woodyard, though, isn’t complaining about the lack of blowouts — nor should he considering those squeakers have allowed Tennessee to keep pace with Jacksonville (6-3) atop the AFC South.

The unnecessary roughness penalty gave the Lions 15 yards and a first down. Stafford then capped a nine-play, 71-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown strike to a diving Marvin Jones.

There is a delicate balance San Francisco is trying to achieve in determining the best time to bench rookie starter C.J. Beathard and unveil Garoppolo before the 2017 season ends.

The 49ers are weighing how quickly Garoppolo can take the field with a fair chance of enjoying at least a modicum of success against myriad factors that may actually slow his development or in a worst-case scenario raise the risk of injury.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who will make that determination, hasn’t given a timetable publicly on when the day is coming for Tom Brady’s former understudy in New England to begin leading his own squad.
